AI is “the field devoted to building artificial animals … and, for many, artificial persons” (SEP: Artificial Intelligence, Bringsjord & Govindarajulu). The philosophy of artificial minds asks whether computer-based systems — large language models, reinforcement-learning agents, brain emulations, neuromorphic computers — can have mental states such as phenomenal consciousness, valence, emotion, belief, understanding and agency, and how to bring scientific and philosophical evidence to bear (PhilPapers: Artificial Minds, editor Bradford Saad).
