What this is
“Panpsychism is the view that mentality is fundamental and ubiquitous in the natural world.” It has a long history in Eastern and Western traditions and has recently revived in analytic philosophy, where proponents see it as a middle way between physicalism and dualism (SEP: Panpsychism, Philip Goff & William Seager).
Current conversations
- Varieties: constitutive vs emergentist; panpsychism vs panprotopsychism; micropsychism vs cosmopsychism; Russellian monism — SEP §2
- Arguments for: the anti-emergence argument; the intrinsic nature argument — SEP §3
- Objections (including how micro-experiences could combine into ours) — SEP §4
